Residents at Leigh-on-Sea care home Rose Martha Court have marked VE Day 2021 with remembrance, dancing and spam fritters!

Wartime memories and experiences often come up in conversation during reminiscence activities at the home on Leigh Road. Residents love singing along to wartime songs and sharing their memories and the team at the home love hearing their stories.

VE Day is an important occasion for many care home residents and the team at Rose Martha Court are always determined to put on a memorable celebration. Remembering those who lost their lives during the conflict and being thankful to all of those who served is a central theme of the commemoration at the home.

In the days leading up to the 8th of May, using resources from the home’s Oomph On Demand digital activities platform, residents helped create a spectacular display for the home. Featuring photos of VE Day in 1945, Union Jack flags made by residents, poppies and planes, this formed a focal point for the celebrations.

A Classic Wartime Knees Up!

The day itself resembled a classic British street party, with choruses of “Its ‘cos I’m a Londoner” and “Knees Up Mother Brown” echoing around the lounges. After enjoying street party favourites such as sausage rolls and cakes made by a member of the team, residents took part in a heritage quiz. Following the quiz, memories of the historic day were shared and enjoyed by all.

Mary, a resident of the Leigh-on-Sea care home, said: “I was working at Southend hospital when I heard the news. Everyone, including myself, went mad with joy!”

Fellow resident Mary added: “I was so relieved when it was all over. I couldn’t wait for happier times!”

Later on, the Rose Martha Court residents and care team took part in a fun-filled rendition of the “Hokey Cokey.” Then, having worked up an appetite, at the request of the residents, a traditional wartime tea of fish & chips and spam fritters was served!
