Budding artists at Bryan Wood have been busy making their own Christmas cards to sell to friends and family.

The resident-led art club gives members the opportunity to be creative and to express themselves through painting. And this latest project has seen the club produce a number of festive designs that have now been turned into cards and are selling fast – 300 cards have been sold so far and all monies raised go into the residents’ social fund.

Larchwoods’s Head Office team were so impressed by the designs that one has been chosen as the official company Christmas card this year.

The home’s gardening club was the inspiration for the artworks – having planted bulbs that were not going to flower for a good while, the residents decided to paint the flowers,  imagining how they might look.

Tommy Miller activities coordinator said “ Many residents have re-discovered talents that they thought had been lost or thought they might never use again. Some residents have discovered talents they didn’t know they had.

“There is a lovely air of calm in the art club and it is very therapeutic as it engages the residents in a lovely creative way. It stimulates conversation, raises the spirits and increases a real sense of well being. And the project doesn’t stop with Christmas – we’ll be keeping busy producing Valentine’s cards, Easter cards and birthday cards too”.

Fans of gardening at at Byran Wood have been getting into the summer spirit with a competition in place to see who can grow the best sunflower.

Both residents and their family and friends picked out their sunflower from a group of seeds they had already been planted by staff members and marked it up with their name on a plant marker in the hope that it would be their lucky charm seeing them race into first place.

The winner will be judged on the person’s sunflower which is most attractive in its shape and size and has the most vibrancy in its bright yellow colour.

To be in with a shot of receiving a prize, competitors are currently keeping a close eye on their sunflowers to maintain their growth, ensuring that they water them regularly and that they are kept directly in the sunlight. The panel of staff members will make their decision once the flowers have flourished into full bloom!

With a clear passion for gardening amongst the residents of Bryan Wood, the residents had more than enough home-grown plants to put up a plant stall at their National Care Open Day, selling all goods for the bargain price of just £1.

The greenery had been flourishing to full growth since the beginning of June and each plant proved to be a successful finished product when it was whisked away by a visiting friend or family member in the popular stall selling them.

Many admired the garden, which resident’s and staff members have worked hard to maintain, whilst enjoying the sun, the cupcakes on sale and some singing from Kim and Dave Valentine, regular entertainers at the home.

All money raised from both the plant stall and cupcake stall will go towards the home’s ‘The Residents’ Fund’.
