St. Marys had a great time celebrating Mother’s Day recently. As always, there was a singer; a very handsome one at that! “We often have singers but this one was very dishy – he was quite a good singer too!” said Mary Ann. Kitty liked him too and said: “I appreciated the quality of his singing.” John said: “I know it was really for the mothers, but I love it when we have singers so I had a good time.”
It’s great having fun with games, trips and parties but sometimes you just want to relax, so at St. Marys, a new quiet lounge has been created with everything from a new carpet, lighting and wallpaper to curtains and furniture. Ann said “it looks nice and fresh and the colours go well together” and Kitty told us “the room looks excellent, particularly the lights which look very expensive but not garish”. As for John, just to be different he said “I don’t really like the curtains as they don’t match, but the wallpaper is nice and bright and cheerful. All it needs now is a couple of pictures”. Dolly said ‘the furniture is comfortable and the carpet is very soft under your feet”. So…. the lounge is a hit!
It’s that romantic time of year again and St. Marys made the most of it with a party, and what party would be complete without singing and dancing? Jean told us “I always enjoy the parties but this one was a bit special because the singer was extremely hot and I was once told that you are only as old as the man that you feel so maybe I should have made a move – just joking!” John is the home’s self-proclaimed party animal and said “I love a good party, especially when it’s kicking with a really good singer”. Mary-Ann can always be counted on to review the decorations: “the decorations were very appropriate and I think there was just the right amount because if there are too many it can look tacky”.
Parties and singers always make for a good time and as usual, everyone had a great time and can’t wait for the next one!
St. Marys is lucky to have a fully kitted out professional salon on site however, a small group of residents decided to go to the local training salon for a change and all enjoyed it, with a mixture of results. Liz said “it was a new experience for me and it was a good one. I think they made a lovely job of my hair. You wouldn’t know a trainee had done it”. Jean also had a good time but with a different outcome: “I enjoyed getting out but I didn’t like how my hair was done. It’s not the girl’s fault – I just have awkward hair! The trainees have to start somewhere and need giving a chance so I don’t mind. All the other ladies looked lovely, especially Dorothy”.
As always it was a new trip which was very enjoyable and one that managed to get a mention in the local newspaper!

One of the reasons St. Mary’s residents are able to have such a good time is due to the dedication of the staff. Many places raise their money through raffles etc., but not St. Mary’s! Home Manager Emily Brizzalari, Emma Reader and Jess Watson ran the Doncaster 10k and raised £285 for the residents’ fund which allows more fun and even a bit of mischief to be had!
Why did the staff undertake such a gruelling task? Home Manager Emily said “there are so many important things in a care home, but none more so than the happiness and wellbeing of the residents, which is why I believe fund raising is vital and the run was an ideal opportunity to do this”. Emma said “I heard about the run from Emily, our Home Manager. I thought it would be a good way to raise some money for the residents and I enjoyed it, especially because it was for the residents’ benefit”.
This race was just one of the many ways in which the home raises its funds. One thing is for sure though – everyone has a good time doing it and resulting from it!

St. Mary’s doesn’t just have fun with official celebrations, they make their own fun! Outside entertainers of a wide variety are brought in on a regular basis and one of the favourites is Animal Antics, which is an animal therapy session. All kinds of animals come along, from rabbits and guinea pigs through to snakes and lizards. Everyone had their own views on the animals, Mary Anne said “I was here last time the animals came and both times they have been in wonderful condition. I held all of the animals and although the guinea pig was lovely, the tortoise was so twee I don’t know how anybody could not like them”. As for Liz, she said “I like all animals and was looking forward to them coming. My favourite was certainly the rabbit. I had it sat with me most of the time it was there and it ended up weeing on me but I don’t mind”. There is always somebody who will see it differently, one of the men, Lewis said “that rabbit is beautiful – really healthy, I know a good stew recipe!” Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to the next event.

St. Mary’s will use any excuse for a party, so this time of year is great. A fayre, two meals out and a party at the home, so everyone got in on the fun!
St. Mary’s went out for two Christmas meals; one for the ladies and one for the gentlemen. Phil Scott was very taken by it and said “I had a couple of pints, which went down very well. It was a great get together and I’m looking forward to our next meal out – I think that will be Valentines’ day”
As for the party, Mary-Ann was pleased with it and said “it was wonderful; everybody was singing along and some people got up for a lark about. Everyone dressed up which topped it off a treat!”
Everyone had a great time, roll on 2019!
