Pet Therapy Provides Lift To Hamilton Care Home Residents

The team at Avonbridge Care Home in Hamilton surprised residents with a visit from mobile petting zoo, Bunny & Co.

Rabbits, mice, rats, guinea pigs, ducks and chickens all to spent the afternoon at the home being stroked, fed treats – and generally made a fuss of!

Activity coordinators at Larchwood Care homes regularly arrange pet therapy visits, which have been proven to help many physical and mental issues, and even reduce blood pressure.

Spending time relaxing with animals causes people to release endorphins, a hormone which produces a calming effect and can reduce stress. After all, who doesn’t enjoy a quick cuddle with a fluffy ball of fur!

The Perfect Mood Boost

Lesley Kelly, home manager at Avonbridge, said: “There is nothing better than enjoying a cuddle with a fluffy animal. It’s the perfect thing to lift the mood during what has been a very difficult time for everyone.

“I’ve seen first-hand the lift that pets give to residents. Even those who aren’t able to hold the animals enjoy just being in the same room and watching them interact with other residents.”

Each of our homes has a dedicated activities coordinator, whose job it is to keep residents minds busy and bodies active with an ever-evolving roster of games, events, visits, and themed days. These range from daily exercise classes, through to visits from entertainers and trips to the seaside.
