Manchester Care Home Welcomes Friendly ‘Neigh-bour’

The residents of a Manchester care home had quite a surprise when their friendly ‘neigh-bour’, Splodge the horse, dropped in for a visit!

No one at The Chanters Care Home in Atherton could believe their eyes when splodge appeared in the garden with the home’s care assistant Laura.

The spotty stead is owned by Laura, who regularly shares stories of her adventures with Splodge. Knowing that several of her resident companions are horse racing fans who avidly follow the results on the TV, Laura couldn’t wait to take Splodge along to meet them.

The combination of the home’s large garden and some sunny weather ensured a wonderful day for all, Splodge included! Spending time with their new horsey acquaintance brought back wonderful childhood memories for those who had grown up in the countryside.

Back in the Saddle Soon!

Following a very successful visit, Laura has promised that Splodge will be back at the Manchester care home for more strokes, apples and polos in the future.

Lyndsey McBride, activities coordinator at The Chanters, said: “Once the residents found out that Laura and her friend kept their horses nearby, we knew Splodge was going to have to pay us a visit. It’s always great to see how much everyone enjoys a visit from an animal, but it’s usually dogs – not great big horses!

“A few of the braver residents have even volunteered to go and muck out for Laura. Maybe they’ll have to bring some back for our roses!

“For those living with dementia, spending time with animals can be really beneficial. Because animals are so friendly, and the visits are always so much fun, it can have a wonderfully calming effect and assist with social interaction.”
